STOPPAGE IN SHIP
Faulty Hold Loaders (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 27. The Nankai Marti, whose master, Captain Shiro Sogoh, yesterday criticised New Zealand watersiders for slow work and extreme concern with safety precautions, had a stoppage this morning when watersiders protested against the lack of proper ladders in holds.
The stoppage was short and work resumed after the ladders had been adjusted according to port regulations. The criticisms by Captain Sogoh were the opinions of “an uninformed person who quite obviously holds the view that working people are not entitled to conditions of employment prescribed by awards and agreements,” the secretary of the Wellington Watersiders’ Union (Mr G. Tuau) said today.
“It is accepted that Captain Sogoh comes from a country where standards of safety and conditions of work for dock workers are extremely poor.”
