GOVERNOR’S THANKS
Gratitude To Landlords
The Governor-General, Sir Bernard Fergusson, finished a heavy round of engagements in Christchurch yesterday with a brief talk to the patriotic societies—the Victoria League in Canterbury, the English-Speaking Union, the Navy League and the Royal Commonwealth Society. In fact, as he said himself, he was officially thanking his landlords for the use of their headquarters, Elizabeth House, as the vice-regal residence while he is in Christchurch.
“I’ve been talking far too much,” he told them. “I’ve done enough talking to inflate a zeppelin. the last few weeks.” • Mr G, C. C. Sandston, vicepresident of the Victoria League, called the GovernorGeneral a true representative of a great line of pro-consuls. Mr Sandston. said that with the passing of the Empire and its replacement with the Commonwealth, some members of the patriotic societies had faltered and wondered if their place had gone. But in fact they were needed more than ever. The emerging n ations needed help and advice rather than the direction of the past. It was good, he said, to have those qualities demonstrated in full measure by Sir Bernard Fergusson.
