Wall Defaced The words, “No N.Z. Troops For Vietnam” were spraypainted on the block stone wall of the office of the United States Consular Agent in j Christchurch (Mr W. G. Q"irk) on Tuesday night. Recently, the words “Yanks Go Home” were spray-painted on the footpath outside the building, on the corner of Manchester and Kilmore streets. City Council workmen removed the words on the footpath. “It will cost about £2O to remove the words on our office wall. The police have been informed. It is a childish thing to do,” Mr Quirk said yesterday. Edible Hat? Mr Willis Williams, a Christchurch television announcer, mystified viewers last evening when he appeared on the screen with a hat in front of him and a sign on the hat which read “Hat for Consumption.” Mr Willis made no reference to the hat. The explanation was that on Tuesday evening Mr Willis rashly announced to his colleagues that if it didn’t freeze that night he would eat his hat. It did not freeze, but it is not known whether the hat was eaten. £2BOO For Section A front section of 26 perches at 44 Wairarapa terrace, Fendalton, was sold for £2BOO at public auction yesterday. An adjoining rear section was passed in at £2200. The sections were offered on account of Dr. and Mrs J. R. Dawson by Mr Denys Chapman. Musical Timing The visit of the GovernorGeneral. Sir Bernard Fergusson, and Lady Fergusson to i iMairenau High School on June 2 will last 45 minutes. Split-second timing would be necessary if the programme was to be completed, said the principal, Mr A. B. Ryan, at a meeting- of the board yesterday. ; The pipers were practising hard. The entrance prdcession into the hall would take only 45 seconds if “Scotland the Brave” was played, but if The Black Watch tune was chosen the walk would take one minute 10 seconds. “We shall have to decide,” he said.
