MALAYSIA ISSUE
Firm Stand By N.Z. Urged
The Canterbury-Westland division of the National Party wants the Government to adopt a firm stand in assisting Malaysia to resist Indonesia’s policy of confrontation by armed force if necessary. The division at its annual meeting carried a remit along these lines from the Rangiora electorate.
The remit also congratulated the Government on the stand it has taken on the Malaysia issue. The Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) said it was easy enough to. talk about armed intervention over the fireside, but not so easy when it involved the risk of war.
The Government realised certain risks must be taken, he said, and was quite firm in its pledge to honour defence agreements.
