MEN’S BASKETBALL Y-Boys Defeat Rex 29-26 In Cose Struggle
In spite of atrocious passing and an extremely poor shooting average, Y-Boys just managed to beat a subdued Rex side, 29-26. in the ninth round of the Canterbury men's basketball A grade competition at Cowles Stadium last evening. The win moved Y-Boys, previously fourth equal with Rex, into third position, equal with Burnham. Points in the A grade are: University A 12, Y.M.C.A. 12, Y-Boys 8, Burnham 8, Rex 6, University B 4, Ranglora 2. The match was of a surprisingly poor standard, both sides throwing away the simplest layup shots. . However, it retained a considerable amount of in terest because of the closeness of the score throughout. The low half-time score of 13-9, an indication of the disgraceful goal shooting percentage, was one of the widest margins. Rex settled in quickly and three quick baskets gave the club an early lead. It elected to use a zone defence and it was probably this which cost Rex the game. The Y-Boys players relied on long set shots from outside the key hole and the few . that did not rebound off the hoop or backboard were sufficient for them to gain the lead and hold it until the end B. Woolford (Rex) was the soundest player on the court His defence and offensive play were good but he did not get a great deal of support from his team-mates. Top scorer for Y-Boys was K. Ewing with eight He showed flashes of good form but made several inexcusable mistakes. Scores: Y-Boys 29 (K. Ewing 8, J. Earles 7, A. Pollltt 6, C Harley 4, B. Stead 2. K. Baker 2), Rex 26 (B. Woolford 11, P Atvars 4. R. Brown 4, J. McEvoy 4, P. Fox 3). Seventh Loss Ranglora lost its seventh game when it went down to Y.M.C.A., 53-40. In the early stages,
Ranglora looked as though it was going to hold Y.M.C.A. With 14 minutes gone In the first spell. Y.M C.A. was trailing, 10-9, and at half-time was leading insecurely. 19-16. After the break, Ranglora stormed into the attack and a quick goal brought the margin down to one point. Ranglora then looked set to take control but it was not to be. Y.M C.A began netting goals with uncanny accuracy. Ranglora never stopped trying, but it gradually drifted back and at the final whistle was trailing by 13 points. The match was notable for the apparent return to form of P Simpson, who has not played a good game since early last season. His positional plav was reasonable and few of his shots missed their -marks. J. Smith also had a good game, scoring freely, especially in the second half. As competent as most of the Y.M.C.A. players were, none was more outstanding than Rangiora's only Canterburv representative. R. Spark. He moved well and scored manv valuable points with some excellent jump shots from in front of the basket. His total of 16 points was the highest of the evening. Scores: Y.M.C.A. 53 (P. Simpson 14. J. Smith 10. R. Entwistle 8, P. Ross 8, N. Saunders 6. R. Heyworth 1), Ranglora 40 (R. Spark 16. K. Davidson 10, M Callaughan 10, D. Lamb 2, L. Rollinson 2). Other results were: Senior Reserve.—H.S.O.B.
