TROUBLE AT MATAHINA
Project Cost Now £12.6m (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 21. “Complications of a highly exceptional nature” had led to the cost rise for the Matahina hydro-electric project on the Rangaitaiki river, the Minister of Works (Mr Allen) said today. “When the job was authorised in 1959, the estimate cost was £8 million, which, applied to today’s values, would be about £8.6 million,” he said. “The latest estimate of the cost to completion is £12.6 million. “But if Kopuriki is constructed, there will be substantial over-all credits because the cost of the township will be shared between the two jobs. Matahina’s cost would then come down to about £12.3 . million.”
