Decline In Imports

(N.Z. Pres* Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK, May 20. American imports of fresh and frozen beef during the first three months of this year declined 14 per cent to 247 million lb from the period last year, the “Wall Street Journal” reports. The decline accelerated in March with imports falling 35 per cent below the month last year. United States imports of beef last year reached a record of nearly 1.4 billion lb.

The “Journal” said the probable reasons for the decline this year were lower prices in the U.S. and higher prices abroad.

Frozen boneless cow beef landed in New York now brings about 38 cents a lb, roughly three cents less than sellers can get in England. A year ago the overseas sellers could get about six cents a lb more in the American market.
