Rabbit Boards

Sir, —1 have some sympathy for those North Island farmers who are objecting to the rating system. It does not seem to me to be fairly based. There are districts in this island where it has never been necessary to go after rabbits. I have been well acquainted with one district for 60 years, in which there has never been enough rabbits to take any trouble about. And I can remember when riverbeds not far away were teeming with rabbits. It is not the kind of country that rabbits like—not dry enough. . Now men come along, chasing out odd bunnies. I contend it is just a waste of labour. I have no doubt that the boards have done good work, but they can just forget the idea of getting the last rabbit.— Yours, etc., FAIR GO. May 21, 1964.
