Dry Upbringing “I was brought up in a dry area and it took a long time to get over it,” said the chairman of the Ashburton County Council (Mr R. E. Buick) at the opening of the Ashburton Licensing Trust’s new tavern at Mayfield. Heavy Frost With a nine-degree frost at Harewood, and eight degrees in the Botanic Gardens, Christchurch had its heaviest frost of the year yesterday morning. At 6 a.m., the temperature at Harewood was 35 degrees, but by 9 a.m., it had dropped to 32 degrees. By midday it had risen to 47 degrees, and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the temperature remained constant at 48 degrees. The maximum temperature in the Botanic Gardens was 49 degrees, reached at 3 p.m. Skies were clear, and it was calm, except for an occasional light to variable wind, throughout the day. Stray Dogs Dogs impounded by the Heathcote County dog inspector will be’ kept in private kennels for 10 days, then destroyed unless claimed by the owners, the council decided last evening. The council, authorised the inspector to ask private boarding kennels if they would undertake this work. The inspector reported that, during April, two dogs were impounded. One was claimed after a few days by its owner; the other was “still enjoying the comforts as a boarder of the S.P.C.A. home.” Power Charges The power and fuel committee of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association yesterday decided to meet the Canterbury-Westland Retailers’ Association to discuss the retailers’ power problem with their own, said the association’s secretary (Mr R. T. Alston).
