HEADMASTER TO RETIRE
MrE.G.Hay,O£ Woolston Mr E. G. W. Hay, who will retire as headmaster of the Woolston School at the end of the month, has spent practically the whole of his teaching career in the service of the Canterbury Education Board. He was born and educated at Oamaru, trained at the Dunedin Teachers’ College, and had his first appointment at Arthurs Point, near Queenstown. Mr Hay then began his long service in Canterbury. He was sole or head teacher at Hapuka (north of Kaikoura), Kowal Bush, and Annat and then came to Christchurch as first assistant successively at Sydneham, Beckenham, Waimairi, and Hornby. For five years Mr Hay was headmaster at Richmond and he has been head at Woolston for the last two years.
During, all this time he became know to thousands of children, particularly in Christchurch.
He had played Rugby as a youth and continued this interest in his schools. Music was another interest and for many years he conducted choirs in the Christchurch Schools’ Music Festival.
Outside education, Mr Hay’s chief interest is his church. He has been an active member of the Open Brethren in Waltham and Riccarton.
Mr Hay will remain in Christchurch in his retirement.
