CHECKS OF VEHICLES
Second Week Of Campaign
More cars .were checked in the Christchurch area last week than in the first week of the Transport Department’s campaign on lights and vehicle fitness, the chief traffic officer of the department in Christchurch (Mr E. Wilson) said yesterday. Between May 9 and May 16, 633 drivers were asked for their licences. Fourteen were found to be unlicensed, and traffic-offence notices were issued asking 89 drivers to produce their licences. It was probable that no further action would be taken against those who produced their licences. Of the 645 cars checked for warrants of fitness 39 were found to have no warrants, and 76 offence notices were issued in connexion with warrants of fitness. Lights were checked in 450 cases, 36 cars being found to have faulty head-lights, 27 faulty taillights, 13 faulty reflectors, and 17 faulty number-plate lights. Forty-two warnings and 23 offence notices were issued. One driver was found to be intoxicated, and his keys were taken. Thirteen of 105 cycles checked had no head-light. Eighteen had no tail-light, two no reflector, and two no white patch or reflector tape on the rear of the cycle. Nine traffic-offence notices and 28 warnings were issued.
Mr Wilson said that most lighting faults on cycles were caused by loose connexions.
In the first week of the campaign, from May 1 to May 8, 453 drivers were asked for their licences, 547 cars were checked for warrants of fitness, and 430 for lights. More cycles were checked—ll0— but fewer offence notices (eight) were issued. The checks will continue during the rest of the month, and checking points have been set up around the city.
