State Servants’ Salaries

Sir,—lt seems that the’ steps recently taken and proposed by the. Government in adjusting the salaries of public servants may be indirectly construed as emphasising that no need is" felt to retain recent university graduates in this country. Without going further afield than the Australian Government, such people at present receiving salaries between £lOOO and £l7OO can double their present effective salary and hrve four weeks’ annual leave into the bargain. For those who have received some assistance from the Government in .•their education, the lengthy bond periods insisted upon, added to’the sacrifice, financial and otherwise, entailed by. years of study, do but increase the attractiveness of these more remunerative jobs. It has been said that government employees ' are, by and large, mainly mediocre oerformers who could not hold their own in private en terprise, or, if more able and intelligent, then dedicated to the service of their country. Is this saying .to hold true in New Zealand?—Yours, etc PUBLIC SERVANT. May 18, 1964.
