Agreement Reached On Kaiapoi Port Land

The Kaiapoi Borough Council’s negotiations with Mr C. T. Williams, for control of a piece of land needed for a cargo shed and river protection work has been concluded satisfactorily. . The piece of land is part of a section owned by the council but leased to Mr Williams. The negotiations have been going on unsuccessfully for several months and the council was preparing to take the land under the Public Works Act. The minutes of a recent meeting of the council’s harbour committee, said Mr Williams, had agreed to hand over the land on certain conditions. The conditions were approved at a meeting of the council. ■ . . Mr Williams has an interest in vessels which have been iised, and could be used again, for fishing; The council has agreed to construct a tie-up berth for fishing vessels, and will be able to use. it both fo unloading and for fitting and repairs. It will be available to other vessels when not being used by the fishing boats. Wharfage Due The charges on fishing vessels will consist of a wharf-

age due on cargo but subject to a minimum charge for a round trip of £6 to cover pilotage. The -fee for a permit to sell. fish at the wharf will be reduced to £1 for each trip. Mr Williams will be officially advised that the cargo shed will be available to all shippers at the direction of the harbourmaster. There will be no extra charge for its use. The other conditions are that there will be no adjustments in the rent Mr Williams will pay on the reduced area of land and rates will be paid only on the evaluation of the land being retained. • The conditions in the agreement will operate, until October, 1965, unless previously extended by - the council. At last evening’s meeting it was decided to leave the matter of constructing the new wharf in the hands of the chairman of the harbour committee (Cr H. O. Hills). Cr. Hills said he was pleased the negotiations had ended satisfactorily. He told the councillors that work had already .started on the stop bank and tenders for building the cargo shed would be called.
