Sale To Russia
(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.AJ MOSCOW, May 17. British businessmen will sign a contract during the next two weeks to build a synthetic fibre complex for Russia worth about £5O million, the chairman of Imperial Chemical Industries, Mr Paul Chambers, said yesterday.
Mr Chambers said he was also negotiating with the Soviet Government on. another deal of “quite outstanding importance,” worth “very large sums of money.” The synthetic fibre complex, to produce Britishpatented terylene, is believed to be the biggest British trade deal with Russia. Mr Chambers, whose company plays a leading role in a British Industrial consortium which will erect the plant, said he expected it to be in full operation In two years.
The consortium is Polyspinners, Ltd. The terylene plant Is part of a deal totalling about £lOO million agreed in principle with the Russians earlier this year.
Mr Chambers said the second half of the project—the sale of fertiliser equipment, also based on 1.C.1. knowledge, would take more time.
