1100 U.S. Casualties
(N.Z.PA.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, May 16. The. Defence Department announced today that more than 1100 Americans have been killed, wounded or reported missing in United States operations in South Vietnam since the beginning of 1961. It said 229 Americans have died from all causes since the United States began its intensified operations to assist In the fight against Communist Viet Cong guerrillas. The announcement said 131 Americans died “from actions with hostile forces” and 98 were killed in accidents or otherwise outside combat. The list also showed 867 wounded or injured and nine missing.
