CARELESS RIDING
Jockey’s Fine Increased (N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, May 15. The Wingatuf horseman, R. O. Cairns, yesterday had a £lO fine increased to £3O by the Southland District Committee. Cairns, who rode the winner, John’s Mistake, in the Otaital Steeplechase on the second day of the Riverton Racing Club's meeting on March 30, was originally fined £lO for careless riding by the judicial committee of the club. Yesterday the District Committee reviewed the evidence of the judicial committee and agreed that in view of the evidence they felt that the fine was inadequate. They imposed a fine of £3O.
Cairns was originally charged with causing interference to Goodbye (A. Cowan) at the top of the straight in the Otaitai Steeplechase. John's Mistake won and Goodbye was second. Evidence was given yesterday by Cairns and the stipendiary steward, Mr J. McCulloch.
