BOOK FOR TRIBUNAL
“No Adam In Eden”
The Comptroller of Customs (Mr J. F. Cummings) has applied to the Indecent Publications Tribunal for a decision whether the novel “No Adam in Eden” by the late Grace Metalious, published by Frederick Muller, London, is indecent or not.
Before accepting orders for the novel, the New Zealand agents for the publisher asked booksellers to accept legal responsibility under the Indecent Publications Act, 1963. No bookseller can stock the book without signing a declaration of liability, which includes an agreement not to return copies if sale is restricted under the act.
The book, by the author of “Peyton Place” was an immediate success overseas and the first edition was sold out. The publishers decided to try to get a clearer picture of the situation in New Zealand as a result of the Indecent Publications Act before they posted the numerous large orders to New Zealand buyers. The Customs Department application to the tribunal will provide the answer.
