Space Cadet In Form For Washdyke Sprint

The smart three-year-old, Space Cadet, should extend his record in the Farewell Handicap, a sprint race at the Timaru Trotting Club’s winter meeting at Washdyke today. Space Cadet has had three wins and seven placings from his last 18 starts, and he looks to have reached the stage where further fine form can be expected from him.

Space Cadet is trained at Chertsey by J. L. Behms for Mr and Mrs O. H. Sprott, of Pendarves. He was a winner on the first night of the recent Forbury Park meeting. He ran on for third to Southern Song and Rocky Star on the second night, and was later promoted to second. He has drawn favourably in today’s race and should be capable of a bold showing.

Medico was a narrow but impressive winner in a similar race at Oamaru last week. Once again he has drawn the second line and he will need plenty of luck to secure a clear run. Like most of the members of D. G. Jones's team, he is in great order at present and it will be surprising if he fails to give a good account of himself.

Gold Maru has drawn fairly wide at No. 14, but if she races as generously as she did when she was fourth in the sprint won by Terri Lee last month, she could finish in the money. She is usually a most reliable beginner.

Flying Over finished a good second to a smart pacer in Lochgair over two miles at Oamaru. That effort entitles him to serious consideration. Dorstan is racing most generously at present and at her last start she gained a decisive win over two miles at Forbury Park. If she begins cleanly, she could be too good for most in this field. The T.A.B. double will be run on the President's Handicap and the May Handicap, Maori Falla and Kinsella forming a likely combination. Flying Step and Happy Ending are picked to win the on-course double, which will be run on the First and Second Caroline Handicaps.
