POLICY ON EXPORTS
Mr Stewart Replies
Mr R. H. Stewart, pastpresident of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation, said that he had been either misreported or misrepresented when he opened the Manawatu Trades Fair last Saturday. His remarks were criticised on Tuesday by the Act-ing-Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Shelton). Mr Stewart said that no-one was more interested than he in the export of manufactured goods, and Mr Shelton knew of the support he had given the Government and manufacturers to increase exports of manufactured goods. He said he would like to correct the impression that he was critical of the Government's attitude towards exports.
But he wanted to make the point that New Zealand manufacturers were placed at a competitive disadvantage before they started if other governments were offering greater compensation than the New Zealand Government for the substantially reduced prices obtainable on export markets.
“A little risk-taking by the Government might make the difference between vague interest and real desire to export,” Mr Stewart said.
