COMPETITIONS Winners Receive Trophies

Certificates and cups were presented to winners of classes in the Christchurch Competitions after their performances in the demonstration concert held in the Civic Theatre last evening. The president, Mr G. Johnson, said entries had been a little lower this year. This would have to be accepted. “We find that television must have an impact even in an organisation such as ours,” he said.

In thanking the competitors, organisers, and his executive for all the work they had done to make the festival a success, Mr Johnson paid special tribute to the parents.

He added it cost the society 15s a head each time a competitor went on the stage. There were about 2700 entries in 250 classes.

On behalf of the society Mr Johnson presented Mr C. Plimmer, the former treasurer for seven years, with a standard lamp.

One of the most outstanding items in an excellent programme was an Irish Jig danced by the South Island champion and winner of the B. L. Win Challenge Cup. Brian North. He made a dashing figure in his traditional costume of greencoat, red waistcoat, brown breeches and green stockings as he gave a spirited and technically superb performance. Of the instrumental performers, the winner of the Rosemary Hew’stone Cup. the Mayflower Majesties Band made a good impression on the audience. The band gave a sensitive and expressive performance of Franck’s Panis Angelicus. There were several humorous recitations but the best was given by Patricia O’Sullivan, winner of the senior speech. Her performance of a mayoress talking on gardens was most credible. She showed a fine sense of comedy. It was easy to see why Mrs Marie Farquharson of Dun-, edin took several first placings and won four cups in the vocal section. She gave an exceUent performance last evening. Mrs Farquharson has a rich full voice, her die-
