Rain Welcomed
The Christchurch Fire Brigade were called to six grass and rubbish fires in the Northcote area yesterday. They were called four times to grass fires in the same area on Thursday. The police are inquiring into the causes of the fires. Children playing with matches are suspected. The fire brigade welcomed the police inquiries, but welcomed even more the rain that began to fall late yesterday afternoon. Sixteen calls had been received in the 12 hours before rain fell. No fire calls were received for six hours thereafter.
A series of grass, scrub and tree fires occurred over a square mile off Heyders road near Spencer Park. The alarm was given at 11.40 a.m., and two engines from the Headquarters
