TANKER ADRIFT
Ships wm Not Help
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, May 15.
A British oil tanker loaded with about 24,000 tons of Russian oil bound for Cuba has been drifting helplessly for three days in the Caribbean and the Atlantic, the United States Coast Guard reports.
The Coast Guard is investigating reports that other ships in the area will not break the United States shipping blockade of the island to take the vessel in tow to a Cuban port. The Coast Guard in Miami has received no request for assistance.
The ship, the London Splendour, developed engine trouble on Monday about 30 miles from the north-eastern tip of Cuba. It was headed for Santiago de Cuba with oil loaded at Odessa in the Black Sea. Although the ship is without power it is in no danger because s_as have been calm, the Coast Guard said.
The ship is owned by the London Overseas and Freight Company.
