Transport Board Building

Sir, —1 have noticed in your paper a drawing of a proposed building to be erected by the Christchurch Transport Board. As this, to my somewhat inexperienced eye, represents a cost which could be up to £1,000,000, could you enlighten me on the following: (a) What authority has the board elected to run our transport system, to spend such a sum on what must be purely a capitalistic venture? (b) Where does this board expect to find such a sum? (c) Who will pay the charges on this sum should rents not equal outgoings? (d) Who, on the Christchurch Transport Board has the knowledge of property investment to guarantee that this will not add to the ratepayers’ already heavy rate account?—Yours etc., ANTI-SOCIALIST. May 4, 1964. [The manager of the Christchurch Transport Board (Mr J. F. Fardell) replies: “The board’s act gives it the same powers in respect of building and leasing as is conferred upon a borough council by the Municipal Corporations’ Act, with specific reference to the land and buildings in Cathedral square. All the remaining questions will be safeguarded when the board’s application comes before the Local Government Loans Board for approval.”]
