Tanzy-Belle York Win Course Double

(From Our Own Reporter)

WESTPORT, May 10.

Tanzy and Belle York returned £2117s 6d for £1 when they won the on-course double at Westport on Saturday.

The Belfast-owned and trained Tanzy had little trouble in winning the first leg, the Millerton Stakes No. 1. Ridden by the Riccarton apprentice, B. Collins, Tanzy led all- the way and camb home two lengths clear of Glenmist.

Tanzy was well-supported in spite of an absence of form and started the win favourite.

Glenmist was always handy but could not peg back the winner in the straight. Grand Harbour finished on reasonably well from the middle of the field. WINNING BREAK In the Waimangaroa Hack Handicap Belle York, which was always handy, dashed clear before the turn to establish a winning break. The Orari-trained filly coasted home a length atid a half clear of the favourite, Double Gold, with three lengths to Irina, third. The well-supported Fonteroy led early after being ridden hard in the early stages of the race from a wide barrier position. The effort told, though, and he started fading from the half mile and finished last. Waitohi led out in the Millerton Stakes No. 2 from Isaac’s Gold, Cotton Blaze,

Frigid, Mushtara, Bob’s Price, Rohan Star, Grand Harbour, and Our Tui. Cotton Blaze took over near the half mile and led into the straight from Mushtara, which quickly drew up to the leader. In a battling finish Mushtara got up to beat Cotton Blaze by half a length. NOT TESTED Shanty Town was the first to jump out in the Denniston Hack Handicap but was eased back to a trailing position on the rails behind Taxman and Knights Revue as the field passed the five furlongs. Prize Girl was next, followed by Cabalina, Fonteroy, which was very slow to start, and Margaret York. Making a run round the field, Fonteroy went to the front three furlongs from home and led into the straight from Shanty Town and Margaret York. Shanty Town was too good for the opposition in the straight and won by two lengths and a half from Fonteroy, which held on well half a length in front of Margaret York. The surprise favourite, Knight’s Revue, was another length and a half away fourth, and then came Taxman, Cabalina and Prize Girl.
