On-Course Double Paid £72 Dividend

Admire and Tobermory Bay formed the winning oncourse doubles combination at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s winter meeting on Saturday. The return for £1 was £72 3s. Admire, a rather dismal failure at Forbury Park a week earlier, made amends with a decisive win in the first leg, the Welcome Handicap. He was never far away and moved up to the pacemaker, Grand Flight, before the straight entrance. Admire finished full of running and won well by a length from Flying Step, which had every chance. Scotty McCoy made up ground for third, three lengths away, with half a length to Grand Flight and a length to Shinto, which finished strongly. Tobermory Bay was an early breaker and well back at the end of a furlong in the second leg, the Waitaki Handicap. He was still well back at the half-mile but was fourth racing to the straight. He was clear inside the furlong, but Megaton came fast along the inner when she worked clear late in the race, and ran him to half a neck. Tobermory Bay is a brother to a smart pacer in Cheta. His effort at Oamaru suggested that he should soon extend his record. Lucky Meadow, another runner to work clear late, was half a length back third, a length in front of Landlord, with a nose to Kate Smith and a neck to Seafield Scott Close Call

Just when Kinsella looked to have the result of the C. L. Ayson Handicap in safe keeping, Medico came on the scene and won by half a head in a close finish. Kinsella took over when For Certain ran out at the three furlongs. She opened up a lead of three lengths over Bourbon Lad racing to the straight with For Certain and Medico next, ahead of Bruce and Paddy’s Night. Medico set out after Kinsella inside the furlong and got up in the last stride or two to win narrowly. Kinsella was three lengths in front of a game finisher in Bruce, with Bourbon Lad a fair fourth, ahead of Paddy’s Night with a gap to Why Not Joyeuse and the favourite. Cloudage, which lost

ground at the start and again in the back straight when starting to move up. Smart Colt The smart three-year-old, Lochgair, proved a class above his rivals over two miles in the R. A. McDowell Memorial Handicap. He made the pace after three furlongs, but soon after he was passed by Gin Sling. Lochgair was outside Messala and Gin Sling, with Flying Over further out, racing to the straight, with Khraizon, Bonnie Lord and Lagmhor handy. Lochgair soon took over and won easily by more than three lengths. Flying Over battled on for second, clear of Flying Melody, which made up ground. Messala, after being tailed off early, was a close fourth, just ahead of Carina Star, with Lagmhor and Khraizon next. Storm King, Messala, Gin Sling, Carina Star and Flying Melody lost ground early. Favourite Wins The firm favourite, Our Debbie, gained her second win on end when she won the W. Donaldson Handicap by a decisive margin. She broke at the end of two furlongs and lost about eight lengths. She gradually recovered her lost ground and followed Phenoma and Shiner into the straight. She quickly assumed control and came'on to win by more than three lengths. . Courtella, after breaking near the half-mile, made up ground for second, ahead of a solid finisher in Towser. Phenoma was right up fourth, clear of Philonian and the galloping Marcus Aurelius. Happy Ending left maiden company with a fine win in the Horace Benson Handicap. He set most of the pace and fought on strongly to beat Moutere Bay by a length and a half. Field, which raced greenly, was ji nose back third, clear of Luverly, which nosed Mitcham out of fourth. The hot favourite, Battlefield, was slow early and he did not recover.
