TROTTING D. G. Jones Had Four Wins At Oamaru

D. G. Jones had one of his most successful meetings when he trained and drove four winners at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s winter meeting on Saturday. Cheta paid more than £3O when he upset calculations in the North Otago Pace and Medico a double-figure dividend in the C. L. Ayson Handicap. His other two winners, Admire and Lochgair, were the win favourites for their respective races.

Cheta, a failure in his previous eight starts, finished strongly from a handy position to beat Gay Robin and Master Alan in the first leg. Cheta is raced by Mr J. Prendeville, of Tuatapere, the part-owner of that horse’s brother, Tobermory Bay, a winner earlier in the day at Oamaru.

Jones won the corresponding race with Doctor Dan 12 months ago. He went fairly close to winning the second leg on Saturday with Our Own, the winner of the same race 12 months ago. Our Own was second to Minnow on Saturday.

Lyndhurst broke hopelessly and lost all chance at the start of the North Otago Pace, while Bobbinet, Fox Able, Avante and Stormlight lost ground. Cheta began best from Gay Robin, Lakeda, Stormont and Safe Return. Lady Charles met trouble at the end of more than a furlong and broke.

Safe Return was sent to the front at the end of three furlongs, and with six furlongs left Cheta, Lady Charles, Avante, Gay Robin, and Gildirect were handiest of the others. The field bunched in the back straight, with some horses being forced vety wide.

Safe Return and Lady Charles led to the straight, with Cheta, Gildirect, Fox Able, Avante, Glenurquhart. and Gay Robin prominent. Cheta took control just inside the furlong, and, kept up to his work, he lasted to win by a length and a half from a solid finisher in Gay Robin. Master Alan, after being near the tail of the field until the three furlongs, came home very fast for third a length and a quarter back, with a length to Lakeda and the same margin to Safe Re- ' turn. Bonnieburn, Lady Charles, Avante, Glenurquhart, and Flying Blue were next in a bunch. Raft lost his driver near the half-furlong. Second Leg Our Own went close to giving D. G. Jones another win in the second leg, the White City Handicap, but she had to be content with second behind Minnow, a winner at Forbury Park last Wednesday night. Minnow is trained by H. Stafford for the Tinwald trainer, D. J. Townley, and she was driven by D. C. Watts. The Cheta-Minnow double paid £512 Is 6d for £l.

Snow Globe made the pace, with Minnow handily placed in about fourth position. Minnow was close to Snow Globe racing to the straight, with Control, Our Own, Flaming Way and Astralight prominent.

Minnow had control early in the run home, and she won by more than two lengths from Our Own. Snow Globe held on for third a length back, three lengths in front of Control, with a nose to Flaming Way. Then came Astralight, Front Line, and Flying Maiden. White World, Harbour Light, Medieval, Rebel, and Little Smoke made mistakes. liesuits: WELCOME HANDICAP, £350; 2:19 class; 13f. 1/2 ADMIRE (2) G.
