STOLE 149 TOKENS
Hunter In Court (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 27. A former professional hunter, Michael Shane Shanahan, aged 32, a pastry cook, was convicted in the Magistrate’s Court today for the theft of 149 noxious animal tokens worth £298 from the Forest Service. Shanahan admitted the charge. Mr J. R. Drummond, S.M.. remanded him until May 5 for a probation report and sentence. Sergeant A. Tolich said Shanahan was employed by the Forest Service as. a professional hunter up to February. His duties were to exterminate noxious animals. During November and December last year he was em gaged with three other men as Government cullers in the Waikariri catchment area. A bounty of £2 5s was paid for each of the tokens of animals killed.
During this period 149 assorted deer and chamois tokens, worth £298, were kept, pending destruction after checking. The tokens represented the total number of animals destroyed by the four cullers in six weeks. The sergeant, said Shanahan stole these tokens from the camp. The other men had to be compensated by the Forest Service for £298 The stolen tokens were later submitted as being recently obtained.
