Transport Plan “Is Worse Than First”
The amended outline master transport plan was even worse. than the first one, Cr. G. A. Franks told the Riccarton Borough Council last evening. He said that instead of connecting with the completely built-up areas of Salisbury and Peterborough streets,, the motorway should go from Fendalton road to the Carlton Mill bridge, where there should be a fly-over.
Cr. Franks said he. favoured a ring road—from Blenheim road to Riccarton. road to Fendalton rbad and over the bridge and up Bealey avenue to link with the northern motorway.
. It would be simple to widen Deans avenue, and better to put traffic into Bealey avenue than into. Salisbury street.
| The Mayor (Mr E. J. Bradshaw), who is chairman of the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority, said that Cr. Franks’s words showed' that he had absolutely no knowledge of the problem which the plan set out to solve.
Mr Bradshaw said the original: master transport plan had been made by competent officers, and after slight amendments it had been, reaffirmed by a completely new set' of officers.
He supported the proposal that it be discussed by the council’s works committee “so that Cr. Franks can bring himself up to a full knowledge of the problem.”
Cr. Franks said he was not privileged to reply, but he hoped to do so when the report came back from the works committee.
Cr. F' W. Gilbert said criticisms of ' the plan had already been fully answered in an accompanying report, and the council’s suggestions had been given adequate consideration.
