Red Cross Branch Activities
A short history of Red Cross work in the district had been compiled for the Christchurch library, states a report from the annual meeting of the Little River subcentre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society. Mrs N. Wright presided. Donations and payments during the year included centennial Asian appeal, £ll ss; assessment, £2O; totally disabled fund, £5; sick and wounded in Malaya, £2 2s; magazine and Christmas parcels for elderly, £2 2s 6d. Used clothing, shoes, and useful articles were sent to the North Canterbury centre, and produce given to thegood neighbour service and the annual market. The Okuti Junior Red Cross had sent £lO to the centre, from a sale of work, and shop day. Mrs R. I. Brake (president of the North Canterbury centre) was the guest speaker. The following officers were elected:—President, Mrs N. i Wright: vice-presidents, Mes'dames A. A. Hutchinson and iO. C. Stanbury; secretary.

During last year, members of the Harewood sub-centre of the Red Cross Society sent a large number of clothes to the North Canterbury centre, and babies’ petticoats and nursery squares to the emergency cupboard it was reported at the recent annual meeting.
The sum of £2 was donated to the good neighbour service and £5 5s to the Red Cross centennial appeal. New capes and veils were given to the Junior Red Cross. Officers elected were;—President, Mrs E. R. Hudson; vice-presidents, Mrs W. F. McArthur and Mrs Montgomery; secretary-treasurer, Mrs W. Strathdel; assistant secretarytreasurer, Mrs R. K. Merton;
liaison officer, Mrs C. J. Martin. LINCOLN Mrs D.. J. Wales was the speaker at the annual meeting of the Lincoln sub-centre of the Red Cross Society, and gave a talk on her activities as field officer.
Last year £5O had been donated to various organisations. An Austrian family of three had been adopted and a large parcel of warm clothing sent to them. Meals on wheels had been sent eggs, jam and fruit, while many garments, both new and second-hand had gone in for emergency cupboard. A burnt-out family had received assistance, and members helped when the mobile blood unit was at Lincoln College. Transport had been supplied for the Junior Red Cross conference in January. Officers elected were:—President, Mrs E. Carter; vicepresidents, Mesedames J. H. Habgood and W. K. Schaffer; secretary-treasurer, Mrs A. A. Barwick; sewing supervisor, Mrs W. D. Templeton; liaison officer,’ J.R.C., Mrs J. H. Habgood.
