HOAX FOR APRIL
Mayor One Of Victims (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 1. Seventy men, using an estimated 10 cars, went to work in the early hours of this morning on the Mayor of Auckland (Mr D. M. Robinson) and the chairman of the traffic committee (Mr C. S. Passmore) as part of April 1 jokes. Early risers first saw “out of order” covers over parking meters in the Remuera shopping area, with “no standing” signs painted in yellow and black in the street. Householders got leaflets announcing the opening of the new parking area and about 100 people turned up. The pamphlet read: “Parkmore at Passmore’s.” The Mayor thought the prank “one of the best.” Mr Passmore commented: “When someone mutilates your home would you think it was terribly funny?”
