LICENSING SQUAD
Police Will Not Confirm
(N.Z. Press Association)
DUNEDIN, April 1. The oflicer in charge of the Dunedin police district (Superintendent G. W. Alty) declined this evening to confirm or deny a report that a special squad had been formed recently to deal with after hours hotel trading. Superintendent Alty was asked whether it was correct that a special squad would begin its operations as from tonight “1 won’t say they’ll start tonight or any other night,” he said. Attention would be given to hotels, as and when men were available.
“There is no special squad ... at least, there has been a special squad since the time of Superintendent Willis Brown,” he said. “As we have the men available to carry out special licensing duties, we will use them. We haven’t always had the men, and we are very short of staff now.” Superintendent Alty said a special squad to enforce licensing laws had been set up in Dunedin in the late 1950’s
