AID FOR FIJI
71 Tons Of Bridging
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, April 1. To help Fiji to cope with the recent flood disaster, New Zealand will send 71 tons of Bailey bridging from stocks held for National Roads Board jobs, the Minister of Works (Mr Allen) said today. He said this Was enough for the erection of a bridge with three 80ft spans, plus launching nose, and when it arrived the Fiji Public Works Department would be able to erect a first-class temporary bridge within hours. Initial use would probably be for a 240 ft structure where the main highway bridge between Suva and Singatoka was washed away, about 17 miles west of Suva.
Afterwards it could be reassembled as two or three shorter bridges elsewhere.
Mr Allen said the Fijian Government had arranged to buy the bridging and the Ministry of Works would lose no time in obtaining replacements for New Zealand’s own reserve stocks.
