ROUTE TO AIRPORT
Plans For Intersection
In hopes of a National Roads Board subsidy for the realignment of the Leinster road-Wairarapa terrace intersection, the Christchurch City Council has asked residents there to allow surveys to be made of their properties. Mr P. G. Secular, the City Engineer, said yesterday that realignment of the intersection could mean the widening of Leinster road from Rossall street and the rounding off
of the corner, pr extending Rossall street in a sweeping curve through to Wairarapa terrace.
Nearly 7000 vehicles used the route every day, said Mr Scoular, and it was expected to reach 15,000 by 1980. Mr Scoular said Leinster road was very narrow and buses had to swing wide to turn into it. Now that Rossall street’s widening was almost completed more and more traffic was expected to use the intersection on the way to the airport.
A possible extension of Rossall street could become a limited access road, said Mr Scoular, and if so the council might get a National Roads Board subsidy for the work. It was very much a question of design. The board had already refused an application for a direct grant for the work at the intersection.
It was not known yet how much property would be affected, but it was inevitable that some land would have to be taken.
