“Purpose In Politics”
Sir, —It is ironical that “The Press” should have given such prominence to Mr Macleod’s highly critical review of Mr Wilson’s published speeches, for the “Guardian,” from which It is reprinted, is sympathetically disposed to Mr Wilson’s views, but in the interests of balanced reporting prints points of view at variance with its own. For instance, Mr Macleod implies that Mr Wilson is opposed to the mixed-manned N.A.T.O. force because Mr Khrushchev bullied him into accepting that view. Yet earlier in the month the “Guardian” commented: “Intellectually, Labour’s objections to the M.L.F. (Multilateral Force] are well founded.” It is therefore to be hoped that “The Press” will copy the “Guardian” in giving prominence to points of view other than its own.—Yours, etc., W. A. M. BLACK.
