POSITIVE SWAB
Runner-Up In Leger Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 24. Pomare returned a positive mine test to the drug caffeine after running second to Clayton King in the New Zealand St. Leger Stakes at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting at Trenthatm on March 14. The secretary of the club (Mr H. W. Meyer) received advice this morning from the New Zealand Racing Conference that the analyst’s report on saliva and urine tests taken from Pomare after the St. Leger says the saliva test was negative, but that the urine test was positive. It is expected that the Wellington district committee will conduct an inquiry into the matter when the conference has completed its inquiries.
Pomare is raced by Mr and Mrs J. P. J. Cosgrove, of Lower Hutt, and is trained by C. A. Bowry at Otaki. A three-year-old colt by Dowborough from Bomere, Pomare was the each way favourite for the St. Leger. He won two races earlier in the season, including the mile Camp Hack Handicap at Trentham in January. Pomare is an acceptor for the George Adams Handicap at Riccarton on Easter Monday.
