Bowls Champions Met In 1st Round
Two former title-holders, Mrs McKenzie (Woolston) and Mrs Edyvean (Richmond), were drawn together in the first round of the Christchurch women’s champion of champions pairs tournament on the Opawa green yesterday.
The Woolston pair proved the steadier and scored a comfortable victory, by 22-15. A very close second round game was that between Darfleld (Mrs Wall) and Barrington (Mrs King). It was anyone’s game to the last head when the country pair just managed to gain the decision, 20-19. Woolston had to fight all the way in the second round against Beckenham (Mrs
Bradley). The Beckenham pair were at a disadvantage in that they had drawn a bye in the first round and came fresh to the game, and did well to lose only 13-19. Woolston was untroubled in the last game of the day against Halswell (Mrs Gates), winning 31-10. The other three third-round games were fairly even. The tournament will end today, the semi-finals being played in the morning.
