Halberg Was Going To Retire
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) AUCKLAND, March 24. M. G. Halberg revealed last night after his record-breaking six-mile run that he was on the verge of retiring last year. “When I came back from America last year I was mentally tired,” he said. “I didn’t have any urge to run. I decided to forget about running. “At that stage I was going to give it away entirely unless I had the urge to run again. About eight weeks ago I got the urge and began training. “At Christmas I had a half-hearted attempt at three miles and 1 couldn't break 15 minutes.” Halberg’s mission is selection for the 10.000 metres at the Tokyo Olympics.
