Town Hall

Sir, —1 wonder if the people who criticise the Heathcote County Council for not contributing to the town hall fund realise that it could mean about 20 per cent increase in the general rate. While they may be able to afford it, there are many ratepayers to whom it would

be a burden, especially people on a pension. The council badly needs new county offices for which a loan must be raised. There is also a great deal of work that must be done on the county roads, and it is only held up for want of money. The members of the council should be congratulated on trying to keep the rates down. —Yours, K. A. GRANT. March 23, 1964.

Sir,—The Heathcote County Council is to be congratulated for refusing to contribute to the Christchurch town hall. As a Riccarton ratepayer, I hope our Riccarton Borough Council takes the same wise stand. While streets such as Picton avenue remain in their present condition and while the smoke nuisance from Mandeville street persists, the Riccarton Borough Council should spend our money nearer home. Is a town hall really necessary in Christchurch? A town hall is rather Victorian and would be used but little by the majority of people. The growth of television seems to have been overlooked by town hall enthusiasts.—Yours, etc., SPEND IT IN RICCARTON. March 23, 1964.
