NO HAVEN AT BLUFF
Rats Prefer Islands
(N.Z. Pre it Association? INVERCARGILL, Mar. 19. Bluff’s new island harbour, which opened three years ago, may be one reason for the plague of rats on the muttonbird islands, Mr A. Hart, the chairman of the muttonbirders’ committee, said yesterday. The new harbour, made of concrete, steel and sand, was no haven for rats off ships as the old wooden wharves .were.
The rats were getting on to fishing boats which could be taking them to the muttonbird islands.
Mr Hart said at least five oyster boats which tied up alongside the new island harbour had noticed a big increase in the number of rats coming aboard. Mr Hart sailed yesterday on the Government vessel Wairua, which was thwarted all last week by bad weather in attempts to land the remaining 17 muttonbirders on their islands. With a big improvement in the weather the muttonbirders should be landed today.
