Jury Alters Charge

(N.Z. Press Association) WANGANUI, March 19. Norman Kenneth Smith a 45-y ear-old Wanganui painter was found innocent of murder but guilty of manslaughter in the Supreme Court at Wanganui today. Smith had pleaded not guilty to a charge of murdering his wife, Mavis Teresa Smith at Wanganui on January 17. Mr Justice Tompkins presided. Smith was represented by Mr W. G. Clayton. Mr C. N. Armstrong prosecuted. The morning was taken up with addresses to the jury by counsel and bis Honour’s directions. The jury retired for three hours, 45 minutes, including lunch. Smith drummed his fingers against the dock as the foreman gave the verdict He swayed on his feet and had to be guided to the door. Smith was remanded until next Wednesday for sentence.
