CYPRUS FORCE

N.Z. Gives £15,000

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, March 19.

New Zealand will pay £15,000 toward the cost of the United Nations force in Cyprus, the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) announced today.

He said the decision had been reached in the light of the appeal addressed to member States by the SecretaryGeneral of the United Nations (U Thant). “We in New Zealand have an interest not only because Cyprus is a Commonwealth country but also bearing in mind the broad responsibilities borne by Britain in many parts of the world in assisting the establishment and functioning of a United Nations force. “This will relieve the burden which Britain assumed in Cyprus at the request of the Cypriot Government soon after inter communal strife made its tragic reappearance on this island,” said Mr Holyoake. Mr Holyoake said that although no formal request for New Zealand military contribution had been received, the Government had made a careful examination of such a possibility.
