‘DISGUSTING’ EFFLUENT
Drainage Bd Blamed
“I saw children playing in septic tank effluent and sullage in the side channel of the road in the Avoca Valley this afternoon. It was disgusting,” the Heathcote County engineer (Mr J. McF. Hamilton) told the county council last evening. "The Christchurch Drainage Board should do something to provide sewerage for areas like this,” he said. “They stop short at the urban fence and make no provision in their reticulation for future extensions outside the fence. Yet such extensions must come.” Mr Hamilton recommended in his report that the county health inspector be asked to inspect and report on grease traps and septic tanks in the valley; but on the suggestion of Cr. L. L. Smith the mat* I ter was referred to the coun- • ell’s works committee.
