At 5 pjn. oh Wednesday Sir Bruce Stewart, a fanner, of Pigeon Bay, Mr McLeod, and his son, Mr William George McLeod, left in Sir Bruce Stewart's boat for the heads of the bay to lift set fishing nets. A south-westerly wind sprang up and the sea became choppy. They decided to return, and as the boat was making its way along the Holmes Bay side of the inlet it was swamped by a large wave. Sir Bruce Stewart, a powerful swimmer, left the other men clinging to the boat while he made for the shore 30 yards away to remove his artificial leg. He helped Mr William McLeod, who got into difficulties, ashore. - He attempted to get to Mr Philip McLeod, btit he disappeared before he could reach him. The body was recovered later. Mr William McLeod is a shepherd on Sir Bruce Stewart’s farmland his father had arrived there to spend a holiday.
