ESCORT FOR YACHTS

French Ship And Plane W.Z. Press Association) WHANGAREI, March 18. A French ’ naval minesweeper and a French naval aircraft will escort the yachts competing in the race from Whangarei to Noumea, due to start on April 18 from Whangarei.

The minesweeper is the Le Lorientaise, and the aircraft will be a Lancaster or DC4. The Onerahi Yacht Club, organiser of the race, said there were now 43 entries.

The minesweeper will leave Noumea on April 13 and is due in New Zealand three days later. She will accompany the fleet for most of the race, going ahead after a possible stop at Norfolk. Island to take up her post as finishing ship. Times will be recorded on board.

The aircraft will leave Noumea for Auckland on April 16 and will return to Noumea on April 19, flying over the fleet on the way. The prizes are £2OO for first place on handicap, £lOO for second and £5O for third, with another £5O for line honours.
