CHAMPION AGAIN

Bowls Win To Mrs Russell

(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, March 18.

A former New Zealand champion, Mrs A. Russell (Northland) won the national women’s bowls singles title at Westport today. She beat Mrs J. Osborne (Manawatu) in an exciting final in which both played splendid bowls. Mrs Osborne had a lead of 11-4 at the 10th head but the Northland champion gradually fought back. After 20 ends they were level, at 16-16, and Mrs Russell gained the vital shot to win, 17-16. The semi-finals also had their measure of thrills. Mrs Osborne went away to a clear lead from Mrs F. Oakley, the sole South Islander remaining in the final four, but the Nelson representative made up ground with some determined bowling and, after the 20th head, was only one down. However, Mrs Osborne, a versatile bowler, held on to win 15-13. The other semi-final was a battle of tactics between Mrs Russell and Mrs C. Joyce (South Auckland). Mrs Joyce had an early lead when she was suited by long heads but Mrs Russell took the lead at the nineteenth, and forged ahead, to win 20-16.
