RACE FOR RUNS

B.H.S. Beats Clock And College

Boys’ High School scored 120 runs in 115 minutes to defeat Christ’s College by four wickets when the annual match ended yesterday. After trailing by 11 runs on the first innings High School dismissed College for 108, and was left 125 minutes’ batting time.

When play continued yesterday High School added 73 runs to its overnight total of 95 for six. I Walter carried on to score 61 and gained assistance from P. Williams, D. Trist and A. Hounsell in the attempt to gain a first innings lead. The College batsmen seldom looked to have the measure of the bowlers in their second innings. Trist soon broke through some rather tentative batting with his hostile medium-paced swing. D. Pickering offered resistance but the only batsman to go for his shots and look comfortable was B. Lake. His cutting and driving showed an ability far above that of a number 10 batsman.

Figure# Flattered Trist deserved his five wickets but J. Christenson was rather flattered by his figures. He bowled too many loose balls and, but for the weak batting, would have proved expensive. Hounsell was inclined to bowl too short but at times he worried the batsmen with his pace. The School’s second innings began well, the openers, C L. Bull and Walter, adding 61 in an hour. Both batsmen produced flowing cover drives and powerful cuts but it was Walter who had the sounder defence.

When these players were dismissed wickets fell quickly to the wiles of N. W. Wilder, an off-spinner who combined

accuracy with penetration and caused all the batsmen trouble. But the openers had paved the way and their teammates were able to finish it off.
