WORKMEN’S MESS

“Should Clean Up” “It is time workmen took a pride in their job, and cleaned up • properly after them/’ Cr. L. L. Smith told the Heathcote County Council last evening. He criticised' Post Office lines branch workmen who, according to the county’s works committee report, left cable trenches in Cashmere badly consolidated with clay strewn about them, creating a publie danger. He also criticised the council’s own workmen who “butchered” trees and failed to “clean up the mess.” Cr. E. L. Tyndall supported him, pointing out that, as far as council workmen were concerned, there were standing instructions to clear up after a job. “We expect our ratepayers not to make a mess; why should we be exempt?” he asked. The council decided to write to the Post Office regional engineer drawing attention to the state of the cable trenches. #
