DRIVER KILLED

Could Not Stop Truck

(N.Z. Preis Association)

NEW PLYMOUTH,

March 19.

Failing to stop his heavy truck at the approach to a one-way bridge, a driver was killed trying to leap clear as the truck plunged over the bank of the Timaru stream at Patua about 2.30 p.m. today. He was Ronald Street, aged 29, of Newell road, Okato, married with one child.

Another man in the truck, Mr John de Boer, of Rahotu was not hurt.

Mr Street was driving a seven-ton truck pulling a trailer loaded with a bulldozer.

As he drove down the twisting hill towards the Patua bridge, he tried to brake hard to avoid two cars approaching across the one-way bridge. The truck hit the bridge abutment and went over the bank. The unit came to rest with the truck hanging over the bank and the trailer with bulldozer perched above it
