INTERCLUB CAR RALLY

First Event Of Season

The first inter-club car rally of the 1964 rally season was held in Canterbury on Sunday. It was organised by the Jaguar Drivers’ Club and attracted a good entry of 28 cars from the car chibs in the area. Each season the clubs compete for the Lupp Cup in a series of special inter-dub events. Provisional results place J. D. Butts (Volkswagen) first, E. W. Watson (Sunbeam Talbot) second, R. A. Gregory (Triumph Herald) third, B. Sharp (Hillman) fourth, and P. Vavasour (Standard) and J. Cook (Rapier) equal fifth. Mr Butts is a member of the Canterbury Car Club. The rally lasted approximately six hours and covered 160 miles, competitors passing through 15 check points. For the first time on an inter-club rally, check point timing was done by punch docks, which automatically stamp the time to the second on a card placed in the dock by the competitor.

Competitors generally said they enjoyed the rally and praised the organisation. The only protests concerned the siting of a check point The course took competitors from the start in Russley road through the Belfast, Cust, Oxford, Ashley, Loburn and Rangiora areas, ending in Christchurch. There were three sections, and the lunch stop was made at the Ashriver in the Saltwater Creek area.
