Smart Gallop By Explain At Wingatui

"The Press" Special Service

DUNEDIN, March 17. A solid trial by Explain and smart sprints by Great Sensation. Blue Haven, Boyal News and Lucky Son were features of the track work at Wingatui yesterday. Light rain hardly marked the track, but it was just enough to make the going greasy for the jumpers and was responsible for two falls. The trestles were 40 feet out on the course proper Ridden by the hight-weight jockey, J. Didham, Explain enhanced her prospects for the Oamaru Autumn Cup by running seven furlongs in Imin 32 2-ssec after a fast opening half-mile in 51 3-ssec. She did it well. Winner of the Gore Jubilee Cup last month, she lost her chance in the sprint bn the last day of the Dunedin meeting when she stumbled out of the stalls.

Sams! (B. J. Skelton) and Great Howe (R. N. Marsh) were together over the same ground in Imin 35sec, the first halfmile in 54 3-ssec. First Mink (M. Turnbull) sprinted the first three furlongs in 37 l-ssec and completed six furlongs in Imin 20 2-ssec. Ridden Out Great Sensation (R. J. Skelton) ran the fastest trial over five furlongs when he beat Blue Haven (A. Allan) by a length in Imin ssec, the first two furlongs in 25 3-ssec. He had to be ridden out. The Cassock gelding will resume racing in the Elderslie Handicap, the six furlong sprint at Oamaru on Monday. Royal News (M. Turnbull) and Lucky Son (R. J. Skelton) were on terms in Imin 5 3-ssec, the first two furlongs In 25 4-ssec. Royal News is coming along nicely in his preparation for the Oamaru Autumn Cup.

Duplex (W. Gye) recorded a good trial for the Pukeurl Highweight when he ran the first two furlongs in 25 3-ssec and completed the distance in Imin 5 4-ssec. Hot Foot (M. F. Dowling) was not out for time in Imin 7sec.

Jumping Schooling The jumping season opens at the Birchwood Hunt Club’s meeting at Invercargill on Saturday and keen Interest was

taken in the schooling, which has been restricted lately by the hard ground. Napoleon Bonaparte lost his rider, J. D. Pankhurst, at the fourth fence, where he screwed badly when putting in a big jump. Pankhurst was not injured. Napoleon Bonaparte, which qualified with the Otago Hunt last week, looks well conditioned. He continued to school on his own, following Sydtrev (R. O. Cairns), which put on his usual dashing display of jumping. Over Six Fences Port Lanyard (M. Parr) and Hy (R. O. Cairns) also jumped a round of six fences over country. They did it well. Captain Morgan (J. D. Pankhurst) gave a good exhibition of hurdling over six flights. He will race in the high-weight at Oamaru on Monday in preparation for his engagements as a jumper at the Canterbury autumn meeting. Bador (P. J. Denton) appeared uncertain of the going and did not jump with his usual confidence, but cleared four fences safely.
